You might enjoy reading Spinoza's werke. He believed in a higher being, a God (Deus sive Natura), which he called substance, attributes and modes. He was considered atheistic by people in his community in the 17th century, his books being banned by the Church because they "contain very many profane, blasphemous and atheistic propositions." Profanity is in the eye of the beholder, no? So you can read without fear of being stained by the ideas.
